Statement by Burma Ethnic Nationalities Network – Canada condemning the violence in Rakhine (Arakan) State, Burma
June 13, 2012
We, Burma Ethnic Nationalities Network – Canada appalled by ongoing violence in Rakhine State, Burma. We strongly condemn the violence that has been steadily growing since a Rakhine woman was raped and murdered allegedly by three Muslim men in May. The growing violence has since claimed dozens of innocent lives and damages in almost two thousands properties.
We condemn the attacks and call everyone to `work toward a peaceful solution to this conflict. We are very concerned about tens of thousands of people who have fled their homes and became refugees in their home land. There must be immediate and unhindered humanitarian access to those in need.
We urge the security forces to protect the rights and safety of all concerned and to facilitate access by humanitarian organizations wherever assistance is needed.
We are also concerned that some groups of people might exploit the situation and steer to their own benefit. We urge all stakeholders to respect the rule of laws and to immediately halt to the violent attacks.
We welcome the recent establishment of investigation team organized by the government of Myanmar to define the real problem. We call upon the President of Myanmar, U Thein Sein and his government to prevent further violence, provide immediate necessary humanitarian assistance and allow necessary assistant by humanitarian organizations as soon as possible.
